How do I do that?
|
The Colorado family law does NOT mandate that you use attorneys to get divorced. Although I always recommend that you have attorneys review your final agreements, the majority of the issues that you will have resolve are related to your finances and your parenting. As a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst and a Divorce Mediator I can help you resolve these issues.
We have offices in Colorado Springs, CO and Denver, CO and offer our Divorce Planning & Divorce Mediation Services to residents in Colorado and Nationwide.

- As a neutral divorce mediator, I will help you work through your divorce issues and guide you so you can reach mutually acceptable agreements.
- As a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst, I will educate you about the complex financial and tax issues of your divorce so that you make informed decisions and arrive at a fair settlement. Because what often appears to be equitable at the time of divorce could lead to a financial ruin in the future.
- I will make you aware of the potential pitfalls and costly mistakes. This is your only chance to make the right decision and go through divorce with control.
- I will provide you with an education and information to help you gain more clarity and understanding of what your situation will look like after divorce.
- I will assist you with the creation of effective parenting plans.

How to split a house in a divorce

Too broke to break up

As a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst and Divorce Mediator, I will help you find answers to these frequently asked questions:
|
- Income and Expenses
- Q: What is it going to cost me to live on my own, when we divide one household into two?
- A: I will assist you in coming up with a cash flow plan that takes into consideration your current circumstances, income sources (including family support) and career plans. I will help you craft a reasonable, forward looking budget.
- Real Estate
- Q: How do we split our real estate property? Will there be taxes when we sell it? What options do we have to “divide up” our marital home and who can afford to keep it? What about if we can’t sell our home now because it’s worth less than what we owe on it?
- A: I will guide you in exploring creative scenarios and explain the impact of each option, so that you can decide if it makes sense to keep the marital residence.
- Retirement plans and investment accounts
- Q: How do we divide up our retirement plans and investment accounts? Will I have to pay any taxes and penalties when I pull money out of these accounts? How do we figure out how much the stock options are worth?
- A: I will help you understand what total resources will be available at retirement. I will explain how each retirement is taxed and the most efficient way of dividing those assets.
- Pensions
- Q: What is my pension worth and how do we best divide it?
- A: I will provide the valuation of your pension and explain the different options you have to divide up/share the pension.
- Business interest
- Q: How much is our family business worth and what are our options to ‘divide’ it?
- A: People often wonder how to fairly divide a business that does not produce the same income as it has historically. Sometimes divorcing couples do not have other assets to buy the other spouse out right away, and this is when I facilitate brainstorming and encourage thinking outside of the box.
- Life insurance
- Q: Should we keep life insurance on each other post divorce and how much is enough?
- A: I will help calculate how much life or disability insurance you should keep in place to replace the monthly support obligations, such as child support and spousal maintenance (“alimony”).
- Debt
- Q: How do we best divide up our debt and maintain healthy credit?
- A: We will address various options and related consequences of handling your debt.
- Children’s Accounts/Assets
- Q: What happens to our Children’s accounts?
- A: I will help you address that and how you can best plan for your children’s college education (if you so wish).
- Taxes
- Q: Who should claim the children for tax purposes?
- A: I will help you understand the tax impact of each of you claiming your children as dependents, as well as the impact of the spousal maintenance (“alimony”). I will educate you about the most tax efficient ways to equalize your marital estate and income.
- I am a military service member
- A: I am versed in the unique issues that divorcing military families face. These issues include military pay (including military retired and disability pay), the division of the military pension, survivor benefit plan, just to name a few.
- Our finances post divorce
- Q: How do we rebuild financially after divorce?
- A: Divorce can have a lasting effect for years if you do not carefully address all of your issues. You have ONLY ONE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION.
